For those of you who want to upgrade from Gingerbread to official ICS manually (because OTA updates are not showing updates) on your Droid Bionic here’s how to do it.

Step 1. First, you will need to be on a stock ROM with software version 5.9.905 Gingerbread. If you are not, go ahead and restore your stock ROM first. If you didn’t make a backup your stock ROM or you lost it, you can also unroot using RSDLite.

Step 2. Second, you will need to also un-install Safestrap recovery if you have it installed, just run the Safestrap app to un-install.

Step 3. Third, you will need a microSD card, download the official ICS update below and copy over to anywhere on your microSD card on your Bionic.

Step 4. Turn off your Droid Bionic. Hold down Volume Up and Volume Down, then press the Power button to enter bootloader menus. Use the Volume Down key to choose “recovery” and Volume Up key to select it.

Step 5. Choose “apply update from sdcard” and find the official ICS update file you copied over earlier.

After about 20-30 minutes, your Droid Bionic should reboot and you should be on the latest official ICS with software version 6.7.246.

This didn’t work for me. After step 4, it goes to the android with an “!” over his head in a triangle. No other option but to remove the battery and let it load back to normal. OTA is the only option for me without rooting I guess (phone has never been rooted)

    • Gabriel says:

So AFTER you get the screen that I described above, then hit the up and down volume keys AGAIN. Then select the .zip file that you copied over. (my phone is currently updating)

    • Layne Rushforth says:

When you get the the triangle, press the volume buttons to get to the next step.

    • KC says:

Same here. Stock rooted, no frozen apps. Tried temporary unroot with Voodoo and no luck. Do I need to perform a full unroot? Had similar problem with .905 and I cannot remember what finally made it work.

  2. Reyes Duran says:

Updating right now! Well let you guys know how it works! Can’t wait, been waiting for so loooooooong.

  3. Mike says:

Currently running Eclipse w/ safestrap. All-in-all I really like Eclipse, even though there are little bugs here and there. If I update to ICS version 6.7.246, is it possible to revert back?

  4. Reyes Duran says:

Working awesome! It’s so quick and smooth! Now we need updates to remove bloatware! Thanks soo much for this!

  9. Bob Sears says:

I’ve rooted my phone. Do I need to unroot before installing ICS? VZW provided the update via OTA but the install failed. I do not have a custom ROM.

    System Version is: 5.9.905.XT895Verizon.en.US

    Android Version is: 2.3.4

  10. gio says:

Any one else Lost the moto radio app since ics update. Can’t install the apk file either

  11. Robert Valenzuela says:

When i did step 5 it started installing the zip file then the installation was aborted. It said error, status 7. Phone was never rooted. Any idea why it’s doing that or how to fix it?

    • Bob Sears says:

My Boinic is rooted and I’m getting an Error 7.

The error looks a little like this:
      /system/bin/loadpreinstalls.sh

      Error /tmp/sideload/package.zip

I looked in the zip file under the System/bin folder and the loadpreinstalls.sh is not there.

I do see a loadpreinstalls.sh.p under patch directory. Seems like a bug in the script to me.

Anyone out there that can help.

  12. Hexx says:

    Worked flawlessly! Awesome. Thanks!

  13. bionic ics help says:

    Thanks

  14. Sean says:

Doesn’t work for me. I was rooted, running eclipse 3.0 on .905 base, on safestrap. went back to base(stock) rom, uninstalled safestrap, unrooted, and followed steps. After the “apply update from sd card” I get:

asset failed: mount(“ext3″, “MTD”, “system, “/system”)
    E:Error in /tmp.sideload/package.zip
    (Status7)
    Installation aborted.

  15. Bionic Redskin says:

What I found that worked for me after searching and searching the net for a quick solution since I rooted my Bionic and all the other Treads I’ve read didn’t work for me either. So this is just for some of the masses not all, you must have to have Titanium Backup already installed. If so go in and unfreeze all of the bloatware (app-only) that Verizon has place on your device. It may take a min to do but once completed go to settings>about phone>system updates. Download the update and install your phone should reboot after the download completes at 100% then you will get the icon of a box with driod bot standing outstide once this shows it will take awhile to get it all installed so just put it on the charger and leave it. But once it is installed you will have to re root your phone since it will be overwritten. Hope this helps…..

  16. Me says:

Can some one post the exact link needed to switch to ICS? Thanks.

  17. Me says:

Bionic Redskin, I dl the 7zip file and Titanium. I put them on my SD card, followed the directions about the volume and power buttons, but I don’t see either files there, any idea?

  18. Me says:

I have searched all over. I am trying to put the items back that I moved so I can do this update. When I try to re-install the root, it says to try again, then says the version I have must have been fixed already. So now I cannot use the “petes” method to root my phone, what do i do?

  19. tyler says:

is there a way to get flash on this device? since i updated to 4.0.4 i no longer have flash or can install it.

  20. Joseph says:

Is anyone having issues with getting USB storage functionality after this new update.
When i plug it into my laptop (Win7Pro x64 ) it does not recognize my Bionic. It charges but nothing else.
    Is this a known issue?

  21. Bob B says:

Wow worked like a charm. Great directions! The only minor issue I ran into was downloading the file on my phone. It kept failing. I ended up downloading to my computer and copying it over, but that’s a minor annoyance. Otherwise, went exactly as planned!

  22. Reyes Duran says:

that link goes straight to the d/l
