ICS ROM for Rooted Droid Bionic! [SpearmintGum Gummy Kang]

For those of you who have been waiting (a long time) for ICS update on the Droid Bionic, I have some good news for you. There’s a custom ICS ROM called “SpearmintGum Gummy Kang” ROM that will allow you to fully experience ICS.

The only thing that’s not working? The camera works for photos but video recording isn’t working.

Still, this is a fully-functional ICS ROM for your Droid Bionic that can be used as a daily driver.

Make sure to make a full backup of your current ROM and give this ROM a try. And let me know how it works for you.

  1. DeBraylin Pratcher says:

links not working!!! AHHH i need ics lol

  2. Jamie says:

Hey Max, it’s me again… Just wondering why there is 2 files listed for this ROM. I am sure I am missing something simple but I would rather ask to be sure. Thanks for everything.

  3. Caprice says:

I think I will wait for the camera recording, I use that to catch funny stuff. Good job though guys, goes to show you the carriers are BS’ing us.

  4. Karen McCauley says:

doesn’t work. Flashed both zips and they ran, but then phone was stuck after reboot. Had to do a battery pull and restore my previous working ROM. Took alot of time and had to do an advanced restore (data) to get everything working again. Thanks for the effort, but I’m on a Droid bionic and it didn’t work for me.

    • Jamie J says:

I could not get my 4G working. Other than that, it looked great. After I installed I did notice a statement on the screen that said the kernel version had to be 5. Something or other. I am guessing I may have to reinstall the factory ROM to update the kernel version then try and install ICS again. Not sure being a beginner.

Way to go on the hard work! Outstanding in my book.

  5. Justin says:

Im assuming this is the only rom working on .902? i have instaled others, and when they actually install, they have no signal. maybe they will work if someone zips the old radio?

  6. Justin says:

Personally I’m not a fan of this rom. I used to have a Nexus S 4G and the ICS roms were always much slower on it and they are the same on this. even with bloatware, if I just run a task killer and adw launcher, my phone is much more responsive. Let me know if any of the other roms will work on the new .902 update.
I was really looking foward to that webtop app being accessable in one of the roms.

    • Raul says:

there are many roms that work
the thing is he doesnt update the rom’s links
a great place to look for different roms are the forums
i dont have the exact link right now but if you google Liberty v2.0(that is Great if you love to have 20 hr battery life, but a bit slower) also a good one is Eclipse(but it drained my battery idk for others)

      • Raul says:

the Eclipse version you search up is 2.2

        • Justin says:

Ya im running eclipse 2.2 now. I went browsing. Its really fast but does seem harder on the battery. And webtop crashes. Know of any rims that will run webtop from hdmi and work on. 902?

  7. Adam says:

How do you get the certificates to use exchange email?

  8. Dave says:

I also couldn’t get it to load. Both zips install fine, but on reboot, the screen stays stuck on “gummy”. Back to 902 for me. Looks nice in the video though.

  9. Spencer says:

I have tried installing this ROM for about 3 hours and no I’m not exaggerating. I’ve tried everything I can think of but I have no data connection not even 3g, can’t make a phone call, no Google Play or Market app, nothing. I’ve tried installing both links seperately, and then both at once alternating which I install first.

Can ANYONE give me some advice? I am extremely frustrated and would like to know how to get this ROM on my phone

    • Justin says:

Read what I just commented on jeremy’s. If you guys aren’t on the february update .902 this rom wont work.
If you are on the older version, you can skip the unroot and just use another rom.

  10. Jeremy says:

I believe I am having the same issue as Justin, my radio does not work. I was an idiot and the first time I put a new ROM on my phone I was drunk, now I can not find my original backup, what I think people are referring to as the 902. Any advice?

    • Justin says:

Go watch his unbrick/uproot DROID bionic video. Download rsdlite 6.4 and the stock rom. Put it back to stock.
      reboot.
      Install safestrap

      option B.
Get this rom working with wifi, go download and flash eclipse 2.2 (I posted a link in the eclipse rom page.

  11. Justin says:

Since I’m commenting a lot on here, I’m going to get back on my twitter.
Follow me if you want, I’d like to get a Rom Review / troubleshooting thread going

  12. Steven says:

Same problem as Karen and Dave. Packages installed flawlessly but upon reboot the screen stays stuck on “gummy.” It has been over 60 minutes. Phone is the warmest I have ever felt it. I think that is patient enough. Looks like a battery pull and restore is imminent. Bionic .902

    • Justin says:

have you tried pulling the battery and then powering on? i never got stuck on load. right after install when i hit ‘reboot system’, after 1 min of it not loading, i pulled battery and turned on. took a few minutes but it did finally load.

  13. George says:

Does anyone else have the problem with the service going off and on constantly. It’s on 3G and it just wont stay on for any longer than 20 seconds.

  14. Jamie T says:

I am encountering the same issues as most people. I started with a clean .902 then gained root, then flashed this ROM. Like most mine sat at the “Gummy” screen for 25 minutes. I had to pull the battery and restore my clean/rooted .902. Does it matter which recovery bootstrap I should use? I used bionicbootstrap would using safestrap work any better? Thanks and keep up the great work! Love the Site!

    • Justin says:

I used safestrap and it worked fine. And have any of you also flashed the gapps? Not having that will mess it up. If u didn’t, wipe and reinstall gummy then gapps

  15. Clarke M says:

installed fine on my Bionic, however, have NO Home button activity. pressing the home button does nothing. even bring up the soft keys on the screen, the home button still does nothing/

  16. Spencer says:

I really would like to run this rom. I unrooted my phone, updated the system to .902, rerooted my phone, and I am having major problems installing SafeStrap. The links I find have either been removed, or when I download the file it is saved/opened as an Adobe file, which serves useless when I try to transfer it to my phone. In addition, I am unable to downloaded it straight to my phone.
If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. I can also chat via email or Skype if anyone can help me get this problem resolved.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and respond

  17. Spencer says:

Okay my last comment can be overlooked. I downloaded a Th3ory ROM that is ICS BASED!!! Only problem, Swpye is not an imput method. Suggestions?

  18. Debbie says:

Everything seems to be working smoothly on my phone with this ROM except for the camcorder
which was mentioned and the webtop for my Lapdock. Can anyone help me fix the
issue with my Lapdock as I use it on a daily basis. It is my only computer/netbook like
experience I have at home for now….please help! Thank you and you are very much
    appreciated in advance!

    • pauljohnson75 says:

Webtop will not work with this Rom. This is my Rom but it is just a Themed Kang of Gummy which is still in beta look in the Gummy threads on the various sites out there for your support questions. Gummy has been updated and I am working on updating Spearmint to match hopefully this weekend. And you must be on the newest 5.9.902 for this to work but it does work with bootstrap and safestrap.

  19. Steve K says:

I have been running this ROM for a little over the week. Overall it has worked great. I have had some issues with dropped 4G service, a restart usually fixes the problem. The issue with dropped 4g seems to happen when I lose signal (e.g., an elevator) and then try to re-establish the connection. Other minor issues I noticed,t may not be ROM related, are Apps like Angry Birds Space sometimes freeze up. I plan to do some tests this weekend comparing performance of this App in the current ROM vs the stock ROM. Otherwise an excellent job, keep up the good work.

  20. Mulox says:

I have a 4G Bionic, System Version: 5.5.886.XT875.Verizon.en.US and I was able to load everything up just great… except I cannot activate my phone on the Verizon network. Everything else works perfectly using WiFi. I tried rebooting, etc. and still get an error when the phone tries to activate on Verizon… any ideas?

  21. Ben says:

This is working great except for a few things. Everytime I boot or try to access google play, it just crashes on me. Didn’t happen at first, but slowly started happening every time. Apex Launcher also “crashes” at bootup, but not anytime else.

Other than that… this is awesome.

  22. Dave says:

For anyone also stuck on the “gummy” boot screen, I figured out what I did wrong. I did use Safestrap, so if you’re using Bootstrap, this probably won’t help you.

First and always, make a backup in Safestrap. I think either sd will be fine, but if you’re paranoid, you can save it to sd-ext and move it to your computer for safekeeping.

AFTER installing the ICS rom and the GApps rom, and BEFORE powering down or rebooting, I wiped data (factory wipe), cache partition, and Dalvik (in Advanced). After I powered off and back on, the gummy screen was up for a minute or two, but then it booted right up.

PS: If you’re using Safestrap and want to dual boot (keeping your normal rom on one and experimenting on the other without having to backup/restore every time), there’s a great set of instructions by timmy10shoes at droid forums.

    Good luck!

  23. TONE says:

THIS SUCKS MY PHONE WILL NOT KEEP SERVICE ITS KEEPS GOING IN AND OUT VERY ANNOYING

  24. TONE says:

CORRECTION IT STABILIZED AFTER MULTIPLE RESETS AND ME LEAVING IT ALONE FOR ABOUT 10 MINS OR SO…OK ROM PERSONALLY AFTER USING THIS ROM I PREFER TO JUST WAIT FOR OFFICAL RELEASE!!!!!

    • Chris says:

K, so initially I had no problems with this Rom, but now am having the inital problems you had, service cutting out, even wifi being unstable, bouncing between looking for 3g and wifi signal (both have never been a problem in my house. Any thoughts out there? Till a couple of days ago was working great…

  25. Mike says:

I think this ROM has great potential but I continually have several issues. First the camcorder doesn’t work, but I knew that when going into it, but that isn’t the only issue. My battery doesn’t always charge while the phone is on, it always does while off, but it is unacceptable that I need to turn off my phone to charge it. Also, the apex launcher randomly crashes and restarts, I still have not tracked down why it is happening. And last but not least, running some apps (angry birds in-particular) the whole system will freeze and reboot. I have high hopes for this ROM but I can’t use it as it is now.

    • Mike says:

Oh and one other thing (not a huge deal), the soft keys (menu, home, back, and search) stay lit all the time.

      • Dave says:

To fix the softkey lights staying on, go into Settings/Display and turn on Auto Brightness. Hit OK, then turn it back off and hit OK. Your softkeys should be normal now.

The problem came back for me after a few hours, but I just did it again and it hasn’t been back since.

  26. nick says:

    so .902…..yay or nay?

  27. Ethan Holmes says:

This ROM should not be advertised as a ‘working ROM’ or “daily driver”. It’s not. It has more bugs than a strip of flypaper. Issue 1: Phone will not DL anything such as market updates without WIFI.
Issue 2: The phone completely froze after using a live aquarium wallpaper.
Issue 3: Titanium BU failed to load full backup of contacts, apps, etc.
I could go on but I have a life…waiting for a viable, fully operational, no bugs ROM…..

  28. natedog says:

Got it. Was fast and cool. But no data or cell conection. It skipped the lockscreen. And home button didnt work. Any advice?

  29. Dave says:

I just flashed the newest Gummy Targa, 4.0.4. I have yet to find anything significantly wrong with it, signal is fine, the bottom row of buttons turns off fine, etc. Looks like an ICS daily driver to me.

  30. Blake says:

The ROM works great for me, but the only thing I’m having an issue with, is that the keys on the bottom of the phone don’t turn off. When I lock my phone, they continue to stay lit. Anyone else have this problem?

    • Dave says:

Go to Settings/Display/Brightness and turn auto brightness on, then hit OK, turn it back off, hit OK again. Should snap the softkey lights back to normal.

  31. Chris says:

Looks like a Gummy 1.0 update just released. (to find it use the goomanager app, it doesn’t show on the website). Any chance spearmintgum will follow soon?

  32. Andy says:

You guys are clearly having tons of trouble with a ROM that really isn’t THAT bad… First off the camcorder doesn’t work and the data connection is in and out. That is a problem with all (I think) ICS roms right now. As for the problems with being stuck on the Gummy screen, etc., it is absolutely necessary to Wipe Data before flashing, and, in my opinion, it doesn’t hurt to Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik Cache. Also, to be clear, if you’re not on .902, your radio (calling and data) will not work!

  33. Brandon says:

I used this ROM and it works great! The picture quality is grainy, but workable. The recovery module says for you to be careful with 902… and I don’t blame it. I was on 902 but the moment of truth was when it booted the first time. So far a very smooth experience, with an occasional app not working correctly. I am not a fan of the green theme however, and I would like to find a blue or white one.

  34. Jason says:

I had no issues installing…running 902. I know that the camcorder does not work yet. However, when I click to open camera, app opens and says that an SD Card is required. I know that my SD Card is mounted bc my music and pics are all on there. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    • Jason says:

Ok…so i was wrong about my pictures i think…open gallery, get “no external storage available”. However, all of my music is there…so I still think the SD card is mounted.

  35. Sean says:

I installed the rom on 902 just fine but everytime i shut the phone off and turned it back on it went into clockwork mod and i couldnt open up the market place.Any suggestions ?

  36. tyson clarke says:

this one works great, but I’m a pretty huge voice actions and swype user. Voice input works great, just like a real ICS, but performing actions like “listen to” “send text” “send email” “go to” don’t work at all. Tries to launch but always force closes. I put the swype beta on there which works great.

I like the ICS differences, but not without Voice Actions, so I’ll be going back to stock.

You have a great site though! Really helped me out, never rooted or mod’d before, great instructions. Thank you so much. :)

  37. tyson clarke says:

ps. do you know of any mods that work really well with voice actions? I use the long press of the search button so I can use it from any app…really love it, dreading the end of the search button!

  38. Tyson Clarke says:

OK, dumb question….how did you get your icons a different color? This green is sickening

  39. Christopher says:

Anyone know why Verizon Backup does not work on this? Would like to have my contacts imported so I don’t have to hand type them all in. They say not to use Google Backup to Restore Contacts as this could mess things up. I’ve got this ROM dual booted with SafeStrap, I’ve booted into my main (Stock/Rooted) ROM first, selected “Manage Contacts”, “Export To SD”, then booted into the ICS ROM, and tried “Importing From SD” but it fails to find the file I just created for it. How do I/we get our contacts? I’m so glad I don’t have to toggle my networks anymore, it just picks up 4G LTE instantly, TORCH APP DOES NOT WORK, also no uninstall option for TORCH kinda bites. Also props on the working camera, the buttons are a little huge and the pictures are kinda shaky, but I love that it auto focuses before every shot, unlike the horrible stock camera. I’ve heard the reason it’s taking so long for the official release of ICS is Webtop 3.0. Would be nice for a ROM to have at least stock Webtop, I really like my lapdock but hate Webtop 1.2, it’s just a full screen web browser. Anyways, props on the camera and network issues, keep the good work coming.

  40. Jay says:

    Files don’t work!

  41. Jay says:

    Files don’t work!!

  42. Beau says:

I have a rooted bionic using safestrap recovery. When flashing any roms to my device I have no service after the first boot running on the stock .902 update and its like when I flash a custom rom my radio turns off but cant get to test mode through #*#*4636*#*# and it shows unknown and when i select the radio I wanna run on it goes back to unknown and wont let me do anything with 4.0 roms due to the activation steps

  43. Caprice says:

Just decided to install the Safestrap along with the rom, its working like a charm so far. Glad to see all the Verizon Bloatware gone (thank god)

  44. dominus says:

I was glad to this see come out even though i got a bionic like 2 days before this was released. I have been using CM9 waiting for a custom ICS ROM.

But it seems steam has run out for the bionic eh?

Anybody seen a fully developed ROM for these devices?

    • admin says:

Yeah Droid Bionic development is near DEAD because Motorola keeps locking down everything, all the developers left for other phones like Galaxy S2, Note, Nexus.

  45. Mulox says:

I have been using this rom for 65 days now as a daily driver, and for the most part have really enjoyed it. I never used camcorder much to begin with, so that was a fair tradeoff for me. I did install Safestrap ok and also made a backup using Rom Manager, which I was able to actually restore back to, apps and all. My only complaints are 2:
-The 3G/4G cuts out completely about once a day, and only thing that will bring it back is a reboot
-When it’s completely powered off, the phone will not charge… it just keeps rebooting forever in an endless loop. The same thing happens when the battery has completely drained to zero and I plug it in to charge… I can’t seem to get it to 1% so that I can power it on and then plug it in to avoid the looping. This last issue is by far the most annoying, and would appreciate any tips/help on how to resolve this please… thanks in advance!

    • Mulox says:

Ok, I found a workaround for the 0 battery looping issue- just plug it into a computer usb port instead of using the AC charger. As soon as it gets 1% or more (enough to boot up) then you can switch back to AC adapter. Another issue I noticed is that I can’t use any bar code scanning apps (ex. Google Shopper, Scan Life, etc.) to read upc or qr codes… and it did work just fine of course on the stock 2.3.x rom… anyone else have this issue and found a fix for it?

  46. Jordan says:

I was about to give this a shot when I noticed that this rom has been discontinued as of 4/20/2012…

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600361

So i guess the camcorder issue will never be fixed? Kind of stinks, this rom looked promising.

  47. tsjazzguitar says:

Question: I flashed my Bionic with the latest leaked 6.7.232 of ICS build and I’m interested in rooting it now to enable WIFI tether. Is it possible to do it without bricking the phone? If yes, what’s the easiest way to do it?
    Thanks

  48. GameGod101 says:

hey um when i go to recovery when booting my phone i go to apply update from sd card and i choose the spearmint one 1st but when it says verifying update pakage it say failed to verify whole file signature then it say signature verification failed. then say installation aborted. why?!!

  49. GameGod101 says:

it eont work it says signature verification failed. why?

  50. Kevin says:

It worked for me with the Manuel clear of the data/cache, however I couldn’t get the “face” unlock or hotspot to work, had to uninstall. Guess it’s not ready just yet
