How to Root Droid Bionic! [NEW]

Here’s another method of rooting your Droid Bionic using the MotoFail rooting tool.

THIS IS FOR GINGERBREAD ONLY, for ICS, see here instead!!!

Step 1. Make sure “USB Debugging” is checked ON under Settings->Applications->Development.

Step 2. Connect your Droid Bionic to your computer via micro-USB cable and make sure USB connection is set to “Charge Only”.

Step 3. Download MotoFail for Windows or Linux/Mac.

Download MotoFail for Windows

Download MotoFail for Linux/Mac

Step 4. Make sure you have drivers installed, you can check by going to Device Manager and you should have something like “MOT Composite ADB Interface”.  If you don’t, download MotoHelper and install.  Then plug-out and plug-in your phone.

Step 5. Double-click on “Run.bat” for Windows and for Linux or Mac type “./run.sh” in terminal.  Rooting should begin.

Step 6. After couple reboots, your Droid Bionic should be rooted.

  3. mike says:

Motofail root worked great. I was able to remove some unused bloat programs. I do have a glitch now though. My ringtones will change by themselves occasionally, and my book reader program said that i need to install it to make it work. I dont understand why. Played with it a little and got it going again. Can someone please tell me how to unroot it now? I dont need it rooted anymore. Only reason i did was to remove bloatware. Thanks.

  4. Bryce says:

Hey, thanks a lot man. Took me a while to find one for .902 but glad I found this one.

  5. JD says:

Will this work on Windows XP, or only Windows 7?

Thanks to everyone who put time into this procedure and the files associated.

Worked like a charm 4-15-2012, Verizon Bionic, 2.3.4.

On a side note I had tried Pete’s root tools a couple times with no success. After installing JDK and APK everything ran smoothly with this particular procedure.

    • Pepuhz says:

I’m not sure if you got it working now but I was getting the same error. Read the top of the cmd screen and it may tell you the problem. My issue was the folder I was running it from. The error message said “UNC file paths are not supported” Meaning I was using “\\” and I switched to a direct drive i.e., “H:\motofail” and it worked.
      Hope I’ve helped.

    • James Snider says:

Be sure you’ve actually extracted the files to a folder and aren’t running the *.bat file from within the zip archive. I got those errors as well when I tried to run it from within the zip archive. After I extracted all the files and ran the *.bat file, it ran just fine. Also, be sure that EasyTether, or a similar program, isn’t running. It’ll hang until you shut it down.

This worked just fine for me. Great guide! Thank you very much!!

  9. James says:

As Tone said earlier, extract the file to your desktop and run as administrator. It’s the only way it will work with many machines. I got the same error Richard just posted but when I did that it worked great.

    Run as admin.

  10. Steve says:

Got it up and running!!Thank you sooooooo much!!!

  11. Chris T says:

Having battery drain issues since rooting. At best, I am able to keep a charge for about 5 hours. Car charger doesn’t seem to be charging. I had the battery recently replaced and a few days ago, while charging overnite, the battery temp was 62C – way too hot. Don’t know if it is the rooting or a problem with the phone itself. Not too technically savvy here. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  12. BC says:

I rooted this way, but I noticed something immediately after on my BIONIC…
Pressing home doesn’t work any more, I have to press the back button to go home…

I’m having the same problem as Holden. Using Mac OS 10.7.4 on a Bionic 5.5.886.xt875.Verizon.en.US on 2.3.4
I ran it twice, the second time after unzipping the file again. Both times same errors. Also can’t root using droidbionicrootlinuxmac or droid_easy_root_v7d. Any ideas?

    Please help! I miss root!

  16. Alec says:

I get same problems as above, I have unarchived the files to the same place, done it over and it still is unable to find it for some reason, any other suggestions?

  17. veronica c says:

OMG!!! Thanx so much it only took me 2 days of endless searching to root .902. I never rooted android b4 im going to learn today!!!

  18. jim says:

This doesnt work on a mac…how the hell do you root a bionic on a mac?

  19. justin says:

so i am trying to root my bionic and i DL’d the software, uninstalled the windows drivers and reinstalled them, put the phone in charge mode only and even ran in administer mode. yet it still wont go an further than “waiting for device” can anyone help me?

  20. tony says:

this does not seem to work on the latest 2.3.4 It errors on the third step “ERROR: adb could not be granted root access via local.prop method

Try again from the start, but if the problem continues, check your version
of Gingerbread — hopefully you don’t have a version where this exploit
    was fixed.”
Does this no longer work? I tried Justin’s suggestion thinking it may apply but it did not seem to do anything. I have used motofail in the past, but my AV is throwing trojan warnings for that one so I trashed it. My phone was rooted but i just got a replacement so I’m starting over from scratch heh.

  21. Justin says:

My method was for if the abd drivers would not install. When I checked my little icon in the bottom right it showed all drivers installed but that one. Did you try downloading from the link here for motofail?

    • tony says:

I mixed this root method up with Pete’s. Pete’s is the one I could not get working, and the one on the link here (motofail) is the one that was throwing the trojan warning. I did some research and found that a lot of the root methods throw a trojan warning and to just ignore it. So I ended up doing that and getting root to work. Hopefully the trojan warning was indeed a false positive.

  22. Waiting... says:

I cant get it past “Waiting for device…” it just sits there

  23. Reghan says:

    I LOVE YOU!!

(Mac users, if it doesn’t work when you type “./run.sh” in terminal type “sh run.sh”)

Worked like a charm, thanks so much! :)

  24. Joe says:

Motofail worked flawlessly the first time i ran it and once it was done i checked to see if i had superuser and i did. but where do i go from here. i want to get rid of the bloat hardware but i don’t know how exactly to do that. also i searched for safestrap…but its not in the market so where do i find that since you recommended it?

  25. Chris says:

Cant Get my Bionic to root. I have never tried rooting before tonight. It says it wascomplete, tells me to hit a key to exit, but when I go to apps, its not there.

I have unziped the folder to desktop and run as administrator. Does this not work now?

Any help is appreciated. I’m runing windows 7 32 bit.

    • Chris says:

      info from phone:

      version 2.3.4

I want to run Jar on my phone and was told this is the only way. I have to unroot it then move over another program Jbed i thnk to run apps using .jar.

  26. Matt says:

For mac users, found this on earlier rooting instructions.

    in terminal type:
    cd “directory location”
then run the rooting script by typing:
    sh run.sh

    ___________
    example:

    cd desktop/motofail_linux_osx/

    sh run.sh

  27. Dave says:

This doesn’t work for 5.9.905 anyone know what will? The program just sits and waits at “waiting for device”…anyone have any idea about what to do?

    • Dave says:

Nvm you have to put it into usb mass storage instead of charge only.

      • Stosh says:

Dave, were you able to get everything to work? Sounds like you have the same versions as I do. Can you tell me which exact set of instructions on the page here you followed? Any pitfalls (and their workarounds) that you can share would be MUCH appreciated.

Also… has anyone had “recent” success in UNrooting? I’m basically going through all of this so that I can use Titanium to back up “everything” from my broken Bionic to load onto my replacement. Then I’ll need to UNroot the original phone so I can send it back under warranty.

        Please help!!! :D
        Thanks!

  28. bverse says:

I rooted my bionic a month ago. I have not installed any custom roms; only got rid of bloatware. Do I need to to unroot before I upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich?

  29. Brian says:

Anyone know if these procedures still work for the OTA version of Bionic that was released today. Thanks

  30. Joe says:

I have downloaded the files after i had unrooted my phone and i noticed that my phone will not accept the ota ics and i have even tried resetting my phone to factory settings and it stays on .905. i’ve even tried to install .902 and it will not take. my phone will not take any update. will i need to go and install .886 manually or will i be taking the chance of bricking my phone?
